As a lover of thrillers, horror, and classic slasher films, this book delivers everything I thought I wanted and then some. I would love to see this adapted to a movie some day. I truly feel it would be an instant classic.
Red Level somehow perfectly captures both the essence of a survival horror video game (think Silent Hill, Resident Evil) and an 80's teen slasher (a la Friday the 13th, Evil Dead) with an unrelenting pace from the very start, nothing is ever off limits and no one is safe. Great thrill ride for fans of the genre, delivering everything from religious cults to body horror and so much more.
LGBTQ representation presented in a way that feels important without falling into the most common tropes of overt persecution or strife with regard to sexuality, at least, giving the MC a driving force that feels authentic and makes his actions and motivations all more believable.
Fantastic read for the month of October, finished on KU and immediately ordered a physical copy for my shelf (and likely a re-read.)
I could not put this book down. Red Level asks the most chilling of questions: "How much are we willing to sacrifice for true belief?"
As Hunter peels back the layers of Red Level, a town destroyed by a devastating flood decades before our story begins and now inhabited completely by true believers, he uncovers far more than the town's dark history. With every revelation found in Red Level, Hunter is forced to confront the memories and secrets he's spent years burying within himself.
Equal parts mystery, psychological suspense, and religious horror, Red Level opens like a car crash you can't look away from and then shifts that energy into a slowly suffocating sense of dread. There were moments that genuinely shocked me and I felt... unclean after reading it, in the best way (horror fans, I know you know!).
If you're a fan of religious horror, this is an absolute must-read!!!
I received a free advance copy of this book.
I received a free advanced copy of this book, but this is very much my honest review. The story immediately draws you in and has you turning the page to see what happens next. I was so enthralled with this book that I literally stayed up all night to finish it. I’m usually someone who reads fantasy or sci-fi books as opposed to horror. However, this southern gothic horror story completely drew me in and left me wondering if the story was ending there or if it had only just begun. This was such a captivating story and I plan on reading it again because I enjoyed it just that much. If you’re here reading reviews for this book then do yourself a favor and buy it. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
